LYNNFIELD — On Sunday afternoon, the Lynnfield High girls’ tennis team blanked guest Nantucket, 5-0, in the MIAA Div. 4 state tournament quarterfinals. This match was originally scheduled for Saturday but was rained out.

At first singles, Paige Martino shut out Elis Vieth, 6-0, 6-0.

Lily Alves, at second singles, defeated Andrea Bunlershak, 6-3, 6-0.

At third singles, Kami Khiat knocked off Vickie Tadorova, 6-1, 6-0.

In doubles action, the first team of Ella Hayman and Vicky McCrann defeated Sara Dusanult and Sartav Lebrecht, 6-2, 6-3 while the second team of Kathleen Brown and Christine Choi beat Gabby Fee and Fiona Keltz, 6-1, 6-2, as all five matches were won in straight sets.

“We had not played a match since May 30 and trying to schedule practices with prom, graduation and senior activities was a challenge but the players responded as they have done all season playing with confidence and conviction,” pointed out Pioneers head coach Craig Stone. “They have worked all season expanding their skill level outside of their comfort zone and being able to create opportunities for themselves. That was clearly visible throughout this match.”

With the win, the top-seeded Pioneers improved to 18-2. Meanwhile, the 8th-seeded Whalers ended the year at 10-7.

The Pioneers will now take on Hamilton-Wenham in the state semifinals on Wednesday at St. John’s Prep in Danvers. That match will start at 4 p.m.

The 4th-seeded Generals beat the Pioneers, 3-2, this season as Lynnfield is hoping to avenge that defeat. Hamilton-Wenham also beat the Pioneers in the Div. 4 state final last spring, 5-0.

Hamilton-Wenham will enter the match with a record of 16-2.

This is the third year in a row the Pioneers have made the Div. 4 state semifinals.
