Lynnfield golf moves to 7-0 with wins over Hornets and Tigers

By STEPHEN MARTELLUCCI

LYNNFIELD — The Lynnfield High golf team stayed undefeated on Sept. 21 as they beat visiting Manchester-Essex, 160-109, at Sagamore Spring on a warm, sunny day.

With that win, the Pioneers improved to 7-0 overall and in the Cape Ann League.

“It was a classic team win,” said Pioneers head coach Mike Moresco. “Six of our players finished within four points of the top.”

Senior co-captain, Deven Henehan, led the team in points (Stableford scoring) with 29. Owen Doherty and Owen Mullin were right behind Henehan with 27 points.

For Mullin, it was his first match back after missing the previous four with an injury.

“Manchester-Essex is a good young program and will be good the next couple of years,” added Moresco.

On Sept. 19, the Pioneers beat host Ipswich, 134-99, at Ipswich Country Club.

“Besides Myopia Hunt, Ipswich is the toughest course in the league,” said Moresco. “We haven’t played there for years so this was the first time for all of our players to ever play there and we were able to scored 134 points.”

Ipswich County Club is private course.

Senior co-captain, Gavin Leuci, led the team in points with 26 while sophomore, Drew George, had 25.

“This is Drew’s first year on the team and he stepped up,” said Moresco. “He played football last year.”

Paul Daley, a junior, was third for the locals with 24 points.

Lynnfield will play back-to-back matches with North Reading on Sept. 27 and 28. The match on the 27th is at Sagamore and is a non-league match.

The match on the 28th is away at Hillview Golf Course and is a CAL match.

“They only have one loss so it will be tough,” said Moresco, about the rival Hornets.

On Oct. 3, the Pioneers welcome Georgetown to Sagamore.

All three matches will start at 3:30 pm.
