LYNNFIELD — On Monday afternoon, the Lynnfield High softball team lost 13-2 at home to Georgetown. With that defeat, the Pioneers record dropped to 2-4 overall.
The defense was the issue for the Pioneers as they committed a season-high six errors that led to 11 Royal runs.
“We couldn’t catch pop-ups,” said Lynnfield head coach Hector Longo. “We are the type of team that can beat anybody in the league when we play good defense but can lose to anybody in the league when we play like this in the field.”
Georgetown improved to 3-1 overall and 2-1 in the CAL with the victory.
Sophia Brown pitched six innings. The senior co-captain gave up six hits, two walks and struck out six. Only two of the 13 runs that scored were earned.
“Sophia pitched pretty well,” said Longo, as Brown fell to 2-4 in the circle. “Georgetown did a good job of putting the ball in play.”
The Pioneer offense struggled as they had only three hits. Morgan Hubbard, Ava Gamache and Brown accounted for the team’s three hits.
The two LHS runs were scored on wild pitches.
Last Friday, during April Vacation Week, the Pioneers lost 7-5 at Lowell Catholic in a non-league game.
Errors were the problem again as the hosts took advantage of three Pioneers errors in the bottom of the fifth inning to plate six runs after Lynnfield led, 5-1.
Brown was the tough-luck loser again, this time in relief. She pitched the final two innings allowing three hits and five runs but none of those runs were earned.
Gia Gagnon was the starter for the first time this year and she went four-plus innings. She gave up two runs (one earned), six hits, no walks and she fanned three.
“Gia pitched pretty well,” said Longo. “She threw strikes.”
On offense, the Pioneers had nine hits off Crusader pitching. Hubbard led the way going 3 for 4 while Lily Williams was 2 for 3.
Gamache had an RBI single in the top of the second while Olivia Kelter had an RBI single in the third.
The three other Pioneer runs scored on Crusader errors.
Last Thursday, the Pioneers blanked host Boston Latin, 14-0, in a five-inning mercy-rule game to sweep the series against the non-league Wolfpack.
Brown went all five frames giving up two hits, one walk and she struck out one.
The offense had 14 hits led by Kaila George who was a perfect 4 for 4 with a career-high five runs batted in. Hubbard was 3 for 4 with four RBI while Kelter was 2 for 2 with a walk and one RBI.
Gamache was the team’s other multiple hitter going 2 for 4 with three runs knocked in.
“We hit the ball well and made only one error,” said Longo.
On April 24, the Pioneers visit Hamilton-Wenham at 4 p.m. The next day, they host rival North Reading at 4:15 p.m.
On April 29, Lynnfield visits Pentucket at 4 p.m.
