WRENTHAM — The cross-country teams shined during the Cape Ann League Meet at the Wrentham Development Center on Saturday, Oct. 28.
“Despite the hot weather, there were many impressive performances put in by both teams,” said Pioneers head coach Bill Wallace.
The boys’ cross-country team finished fourth in the CAL Meet with 115 points. Hamilton-Wenham was first overall with 36 points. Newburyport finished second with 58 points. Triton placed third with 83 points, and Essex Tech was fifth with 130 points.
The lowest score in cross-country wins a meet.
“The boys’ ran well and ended up finishing fourth overall as a team,” said Wallace. “This is the highest finish by the boys’ cross-country team in a long time.”
Captain Shea McCarthy finished 16th in the CAL Meet (18:16). Sophomore Dylan Nguyen placed 20th overall (18:36). Senior captain Ryan Nguyen secured a 22nd place finish (18:56). Senior Srivanth Tudi was 23rd overall (18:58).
Senior Owen White placed 34th in the meet (19:40). Senior David Mower finished 53rd overall (20:19). Senior Jack Marenghi was 54th in the meet (20:22).
Girls’ results
The girls’ cross-country team finished sixth in the CAL Meet with 149 points.
“The girls’ team ran very well,” said Wallace.
Newburyport finished first overall with 41 points. Pentucket was second with 90 points. Hamilton-Wenham placed third with 95 points. Triton was fourth with 119 points, and Amesbury finished fifth with 124 points.
Senior captain Viola Wertz finished 16th overall (22:04). Junior Gabby Bottaro placed 18th during the meet (22:22). Junior Kaila George secured a 33rd place finish (23:39). Sophomore Shea Moore was 41st overall (24:21).
Junior Caitlin Buoniconti placed 46th in the meet (24:51). Senior captain Katie Cash finished 54th overall (25:55). Senior captain Olivia Goguen was 64th in the meet (28:19).
JV results
The cross-country teams also competed in JV Races during the meet. The boys’ team finished second in the JV Race with 80 points.
Sophomore Nick DeGennaro placed sixth in the Boys’ JV Race (19:52). Freshman Liam Gardner finished eighth overall (20:10). Junior Ashkrit Mahajan was 22nd during the meet (21:34). Senior Brennan Curley placed 23rd in the JV Race (21:34). Sophomore Mike Marenghi was 28th during the meet (21:49).
Freshman Maeve Wertz finished 22nd overall in the Girls’ JV Race (28:10). Rafaela Cavallari-Tsuji placed 31st overall (29:14). Sophomore Siri Tudi was 50th in the meet (32:46). Senior Emilie Bell finished 60th overall (36:57).
Upcoming meet
The cross-country teams will compete in the Division 3 State Divisional Meet on Saturday, Nov. 11 at Northfield Mountain.
“Both teams will try to qualify for the All-State Championships for the third year in a row,” said Wallace.
