PEABODY — The Lynnfield High boys’ hockey team defeated Peabody 5-1 at McVann-O’Keefe Rink last Saturday afternoon in a non-league game. Although the rink is the home ice for both schools, the Pioneers were the home team in this game.

With that victory, the Pioneers improved to 7-1 overall as they won their third game in a row. Peabody, meanwhile, fell to 0-6.
“I was happy with the result,” said Pioneers head coach Jon Gardner. “We were able to get our younger players in there.”
Lynnfield led, 3-0, after the first period and 4-1 after the second.
Joe Mack scored first with 11:58 left in the first period assisted by George Deroche and Jack Hammersley. Deroche made it 2-0 with 4:28 remaining, assisted by Jaret Simpson and John Simonetti.
The final Pioneer goal came with 3:34 left in the first on the power play as Deroche scored again assisted by Mack.
In the second, the Tanners scored first with 11:33 left, but Kevin Murphy made it 4-1 on a shorthanded goal with 1:37 remaining. Dan Mack assisted.
“That was a backbreaker no doubt,” said Gardner, about the late tally.
Murphy scored the final goal on a power play with 6:42 left, assisted by Cooper Marengi and Simpson.
Aiden Kelly (7-1) got the win in goal playing until midway through the third period making 11 saves. Freshman, Jake Debenedictis, played the rest of the game in goal and made three saves.
On Wednesday night at 8:15 p.m., the Pioneers have a big game as they welcome Newburyport to McVann-O’Keefe. First place in the Cape Ann League will be on the line in that game.
Lynnfield then hosts Triton at noon on Saturday.
