LYNNFIELD — On Sept. 26, the Lynnfield High boys’ soccer team edged guest Ipswich, 2-1, on a dark, cloudy day.
With that victory, the Pioneers improved to 7-1-2 overall and 6-0-1 in the Cape Ann League. The Tigers, meanwhile, fell to 3-4-2 overall and 3-4-1 in the CAL.
Senior Matt Reinold was the hero for the Pioneers in this one, scoring the game-winning goal with a little over 16 minutes left as junior Nate Zalvan assisted.
The Tigers scored first as the ball ricocheted off a Pioneer defender into the net in the 15th minute of the opening half.
Ipswich held that lead until the fourth minute of the season half as junior Rocco Scenna tied it with the assist going to senior Joel Anthony.
“They have a good team with a solid defense,” said Pioneers head coach Brent Munroe. “They were tough to score on after they took the lead.”
Lynnfield goalie, senior captain Kelan Cardinal, made two stops to go to 7-1-2 in net.
On Sept. 24, the Pioneers beat host Pentucket, 2-0, up in West Newbury.
Both goals for the Pioneers came in the second half. Scenna had the first one on a partial break in the 15th minute.
About 10 minutes later, Reinold hooked his corner kick into the Panther net.
Cardinal made four saves to record his fifth shutout of the fall.
“It was a good bounce-back win after our loss to Masconomet the game before,” recalled Munroe, as his squad lost 2-0 to the Chieftains the day before. “We had a slow first half but played much better in the second half.”
On Oct. 2, the Pioneers visit Newburyport in a key league match starting at 4 p.m. Lynnfield is looking for the season sweep over the Clippers as they won the first meeting, 1-0, on Sept. 5.
Lynnfield then goes to Manchester-Essex on Oct. 8 with that contest happening under the lights at 7 p.m.
