LYNNFIELD — The Lynnfield High boys’ indoor track and field team had its team banquet on March 1. That night, head coach Christine Smith gave out four awards.

Sophomore sprinter and long jumper, Joe Cucciniello, received the team’s MVP Award while senior captain, Mike O’Brien, took home the Coaches Award. O’Brien competed in the shot-put.

The Most Improved Award went to junior captain Angelo DeLuca who ran the mile.

The final award was the Rookie of the Year Award and that went to freshman, Charlie Morgan, who is a sprinter.

The Pioneers will be losing only two seniors to graduation, O’Brien and co-captain Nick Marcinowski, who was also a shot-putter.

“I had Mike for two years as he missed one with an ACL injury and the other due to spring football last year,” pointed out Smith, who just completed her sixth-year at the helm. “Nick, I only had this year.”

Smith will miss her two 12th-graders.

“They were both hard working and were good team leaders,” said Smith, who will now coach the Pioneer girls’ outdoor team this spring.

In the regular season, Lynnfield went 1-3 as they were in fourth place in the Cape Ann League Kinney Division. They then came in 7th place in the CAL league meet on Feb. 8 held at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston.

There are 10 schools in the league.

Next winter, the Pioneers are slated to have more than 40 members return as they will be one of the most experienced teams in the league.

“We should have a strong team next year,” said Smith. “We will be led by our 4×200 relay team as all four of them will be returning.”

Cucciniello, Morgan, Kyle Schmitz and Anthony Attubato make-up that relay team.
