Boys’ track tops Hornets and Tigers for tri-meet sweep

BOSTON — It was a successful night for the Lynnfield High boys’ indoor track and field team on Jan. 30 as they swept a tri-meet. The Pioneers defeated Manchester-Essex, 67-27 and Ipswich, 62-58 at The Track at New Balance in Brighton.

With the wins Lynnfield finished in second place behind Amesbury in the Cape Ann League Baker Division going 3-1.

 “It was a great meet for us,” stated Pioneers head coach Christine Smith. “We dominated in the high jump and long jump.”

Four Pioneers came in first place against both schools in their respective events. Ethan Francis had a high jump of six feet while Eli Mendese had a long jump of 19-7.75.

The two other winners against both teams were Sirvanth Tudi in the two mile (a personal best 11:06.59) and Joe Cucciniello in the 55-meters (a personal best 6.85 seconds).

Two Pioneers came in second against both teams as Francis had a long jump of 19-2 while Jessie Dorman had a personal-best time of 6.94 in the 55-meters.

Two Lynnfield members were first against Ipswich and second against Manchester-Essex.

Nick Groussis had a time of 9.02 seconds in the 55-meter hurdles while Cucciniello had a 38.46 in the 300-meters.

The 4×200 relay team of Cucciniello, Dorman, Charlie Morgan and Dylan Reilly broke the school record with a first-place time of 1:36.27.

Jack Kouyoumujin came in second against both teams in the shot put with a distance of 34-11 which is a personal-best throw.

“We ended up with so many personal-best times,” pointed out Smith, who is really proud of her squad.

The next event for the Pioneers will be on Feb. 14 as they compete in the Division 5 State Meet. That event will take place at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston and will start at 4:30 p.m.
