LYNNFIELD — On Oct. 2, the Lynnfield High girls’ cross country team beat guest Georgetown, 15-50, to even its record at 2-2.
Gabby Bottaro, who has been the first Pioneer to cross the finish line in all four races, had a time of 21:06 to place first overall in the 2.9-mile course.
Kaila George was second (21:17) edging out third place Caitlin Buoniconti (21:25).
Abby Lopez captured fourth (21:33) while Shealyn Morrre rounded out the top five at 23:07.
Lynnfield had the top seven finishes against the Royals as Maeve Wertz was sixth (23:08) and April Sun was seventh (24:21).
George and Sun recorded personal-best times that day.
“Despite not having much competition from Georgetown because they were so young, the girls still pushed themselves and each other to run very well,” said Pioneers first-year head coach Liane Cook. “I was very proud of them. They could have taken an easier route and just ran the race as more of a social workout, but they didn’t. They listened to my strategy to work with each other and strive together.”
The girls look to go to 3-2 on Oct. 9 as they host Hamilton-Wenham at 3:30 p.m.
That will be a tough task for the Pioneers as the Generals enter the meet at 4-0.
“They have been beating everybody by a lot,” pointed out Cook.
It is also Senior Day as the five Pioneers seniors will be honored before the meet.
