WENHAM — The Lynnfield High girls’ lacrosse team lost to host Hamilton-Wenham, 16-5, at Gordon College on Sunday evening.

With that defeat, the Pioneers fell to 0-2 overall and 0-1 in the Cape Ann League. The Generals, meanwhile went to 1-0 overall and in the league.

Hamilton-Wenham took control of this game in the opening half as they were up 10-2 at the break.

“Their top player (Evie Bernard) scored six goals for them and she also controlled the draws,” pointed out Pioneers head coach Christina Serra.

Bernard, a junior, will be playing at Penn in two years. She was the league’s MVP last year with 94 goals and 17 assists.

Hayden Valiton led Lynnfield with three goals while Ava Damiani scored twice and had one assist. Taylor Valiton, Hayden’s older sister and Chloe Gromko each had one assist.

Freshman goalie, Gabby Cossano, made eight saves.

In the season opener on March 27, the Pioneers lost, 6-4, at home to Bishop Fenwick.

“They have a backer defense where one girl follows the ball and it turns into a double team to whoever has the ball,” pointed out Serra. “We had trouble with that but hopefully, we can learn. They also had a good goalie.”

Just like the Hamilton-Wenham game, Hayden Valiton scored three times while Taylor Valiton had one goal and one assist.

Damiani and Maura Flaws each had one assist.

The next game for the Pioneers will be a non-league one as they visit Watertown on April 4. That game will be under the lights at 6:30 p.m.

Lynnfield will then return to CAL play on April 7 as they welcome Triton at 4 p.m.
