BOSTON — The Lynnfield High girls’ indoor track and field team improved to 2-0 on Jan. 7 as they defeated Hamilton-Wenham, 66-33, at the Track at New Balance in Boston.
“It was another good win for the team,” said Pioneers head coach Bill Wallace. “Hamilton-Wenham had a few good track athletes but we were able to overcome that obstacle because of the depth we have. Whenever they were able to grab a first we got second and third which limited the amount of points they scored.”
The Pioneers had four individual winners and two relay wins against the Generals. The four individual winners were Lauren Mattia in the 600-meters (1:57.09), Sophia Giardina in the 300 (48.85) (PR), Elliana Moretti in the shot-put (25-8) and Clara Caulfield in the high jump 4-8.
For Giardina and Caulfield, they had personal-bests.
The 4×200 relay team of Caulfield, Emma Greenleaf, Giardina and Lily Rocco won with a time of 2:00.58.
The 4×400 relay team of Lauren Mattia, Sophia Morgese, Caitlin Buoniconti and Aislin McCormack also won with a time of 4:47.81.
Lynnfield also had eight second-place finishes led by Allison Maddocks who was second in the long jump (14-2) and high jump (4-8).
The next event for the Pioneers will be the Division 5 state relays on Jan. 19 at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston.
“I am also looking forward to the meets against Ipswich and Amesbury which will help decide who wins the league title,” added Wallace as the Pioneers will race the Tigers on Jan. 21 and the Red Hawks on Jan. 28.
