BOSTON — On Jan. 28, the Lynnfield High girls’ indoor track and field team was edged, 51-49, by Amesbury at the Track at New Balance in Brighton.
With the defeat, the Pioneers ended up at 2-2 overall as they came in third place in the Cape Ann League Baker Division.
“I knew going into the meet that it was going to come down to the relays and it did,” pointed out Pioneers head coach Bill Wallace. “We had to win both relays and only ended up winning one. The girls did come ready to compete though and it took a few personal records from some Amesbury athletes to pull off the win.”
Five Pioneer individuals won against the Red Hawks. Those five were Abby Lopez (13:41.11 in the two mile), Sophia Giardina (8.12 in the 55-meters), Lauren Mattia (1:50.84 in the 600-meters), Kaila George (13’10” in the long jump) and Clara Caulfield (4’8″ in the high jump).
The 4×400 relay team of Mattia, Sophia Morgese, George and Aislin McCormack also won with a time of 4:55.65.
Lynnfield had four second-place finishes: Lopez in the mile (5:54.29), Emma Greenleaf in the 55-meter hurdles (10.12) and Caitlin Buoniconti and Allison Maddocks in the high jump (4-6).
The Pioneers had seven third-place finishes: Maddocks in the long jump (13-2), Christine Choi in the high jump (4-6), Giardina in the 300-meters (46.28), Ava Ragusa in the 600 (1:57.44), Gabby Bottaro in the mile (6:50.02), Lily Rocco in the 55 (8.18), and Caulfield in the 55-meter hurdles (10:46).
