LYNNFIELD — The Lynnfield High girls’ track and field team finished at 3-3 last spring. Seventh-year head coach Christine Smith lost four seniors from that team to graduation including Cape Ann League All-Stars April Luders and Lauren Braconnier.
This season, there are 25 girls back and the roster will be a little over 30 members overall.
“It is a good deal lower than the pre-pandemic numbers we had but we have a lot of good talent back,” said Smith, who coaches the Pioneers’ boys’ indoor team during the winter.
The three senior captains this spring are Riley Hallahan, Jasmine Rose and Julia Seelig. Hallahan was an All-Star last year in the shot and discus. She is the team’s lone returning All-Star.
Rose will compete in the hurdles, sprints and jumps while Seelig is a distance runner.
Other key members back are Melissa Caprio (junior- jumper and hurdler), Olivia Goguen (sophomore (hurdler and mid-distance runner), Maggie Davidson (senior- mid-distance, jumper and thrower) and Julia Carbone (junior- sprinter).
This season, the CAL will be broken into two divisions, the Kinney (large) and Baker (small). While Lynnfield is in the Kinney in most sports, they are in the Baker in girls’ track.
“Some of those team in the Kinney have huge rosters,” pointed out Smith.
The Pioneers will have seven meets this year as one from last year was postponed and never made up.
On Wednesday, the team will open the 2022 campaign as they host Newburyport at the middle school at 4 p.m. (weather pending).
On April 11, the Pioneers have their first road meet as they visit Amesbury.
