UPDATE: Pioneer spikers fall to Generals after split matches against Ipswich, North Reading

LYNNFIELD — On Oct. 5, the Lynnfield High volleyball team hosted the defending Division 4 state champions, Ipswich, trying to get a split of the season series.

The undefeated Tigers, however, were triumphant winning 3-0 to complete the season sweep.

Ipswich won the three sets, 25-20, 25-16 and 25-14.

Ipswich, who improved to 10-0 overall and in the Cape Ann League with the win, beat the Pioneers, 3-0, back on Sept. 11 in the first meeting.

Seniors Liv Tare and Lily DeLeo led the team in service points with eight. Junior, Erika Pasquale had a team-high eight kills.

Chase Carangelo had a team-high 21 digs while DeLeo led the team in assists with seven.

With that defeat, the Pioneers record dropped to 6-6 overall and 5-4 in the CAL.

On Oct. 3, the news was much better as they edged host North Reading 3-2 to complete the season sweep over the rival Hornets.

The Hornets won the first set, 25-19, but the Pioneers bounced back and won set two, 25-18.

In set three, North Reading won, 25-15, but the Pioneers captured the final two sets winning, 25-17, and 15-12.

Lynnfield defeated the Hornets in the first match-up, 3-0, back on Sept. 15 at home.

Tare had 18 service points while junior, Erin Higdon, had a team-high 11 kills. DeLeo led the Pioneers in assists with 18 while sophomore, Olivia Kelter, had a team-high 14 digs.

The Pioneers are 6-2 in their last eight games after losing their opening four matches of the season.

The next two matches will be at home for LHS. On Oct. 12, they welcome Hamilton-Wenham. Lynn Classical then comes to town on Oct. 17 for a non-league match.

After 12 matches, Carangelo, a junior, leads the team in kills with 99 and receptions with 141.

DeLeo, a setter, is the team leader in assists with 150 while sophomore Lexi Vaquerano, leads the squad in blocks with 20. Vaquerano is an outside hitter.

Kelter is the team leader in digs with 140 and Higdon is the service aces leader with 50.

Tare is first in hitting percentage at .264.
