Golfers beat Newburyport by one, keep postseason hopes alive
By STEPHEN MARTELLUCCI

ROWLEY — The Lynnfield High golf team gave host Newburyport all they could handle on Monday afternoon at Rowley Country Club as they were nipped, 164-163, on a hot, sunny day.
With the loss, the Pioneers’ record dropped to 6-6 overall while the Clippers, who are in first place in the Cape Ann League, improved to 12-1.
“The kids brought their A-game and played very well,” said Pioneers head coach Mike Moresco. “That team is the best in the league and it came down to the seventh golfer.”
Max Sabbagh, Lynnfield’s top player so far this season, led the team in points with 33 (Stableford scoring). Sam Bird was second with 31 while Brady Cole, who was coming back from an injury, was third with 25.
Newburyport was able to complete the season sweep over the Pioneers this fall.
On Oct. 1, the Pioneers rolled over visiting Georgetown, 168-151, at Sagamore Spring.
“Max, Drew (George) and Angelo (Covino) all had great days,” recalled Moresco.
It was a good bounce-back win for the team since they fell, 155-141, to host Triton at Ould Newbury on Sept. 29.
“That is a difficult course,” said Moresco, as several of his players have never played that course before.
On Wednesday, the Pioneers wrap up the regular season (weather pending) at home against North Reading. The Pioneers are looking for the season sweep over the Hornets as they beat them 159-155 in the first meeting at Hillview Golf Club.
This is the biggest match of the year because if the Pioneers win they will qualify for the state tournament.
