LYNNFIELD — The Lynnfield High baseball team improved their winning streak to four games last week with league victories over Triton and Newburyport.
The Pioneers defeated the Vikings 3-1 on Thursday at home and the Clippers 12-0 on the road Saturday.
Lynnfield put together perhaps their best performance of the season against Newburyport.
Junior captain Luke DiSilvio got the win on the mound, pitching a complete-game, 2-hitter for the shutout. He racked up 11 strikeouts in the win.
DiSilvio needed to be locked in for most of the game as the Pioneers put up single runs in the 1st and 3rd innings but didn’t really break through until a 6-run 6th made it 8-0. They added four more in the 7th to account for the final.
Lynnfield racked up 11 hits: 8 singles and 3 doubles.
DiSilvio and senior captain Madux Iovinelli both went 2-for-4 at the plate with 2 RBI. Junior captain Andrew George was 2-for-2 with a walk. Senior captain Tyler Adamo had 2 RBI and 2 runs scored; senior captain Nick Groussis had 2 RBI and senior Charlie Morgan had an RBI knock and 3 runs scored to help account for a balanced and deep Pioneer attack.
The first run came after Iovinelli singled Groussis to third and Groussis scored before a tag completed a double play to end the inning.
DiSilvio took over from there, racking up two strikeouts in every single inning except for the 3rd.
Lynnfield scratched across another in the 3rd when Morgan walked, stole second, moved to third on an error and scored on a Groussis single.
The bats really broke out in the 6th.
DiSilvio fittingly led it off with a single, stole second and scored on a line drive base hit by senior Walter Radulski. A base hit from junior Matthew Tracy and later an error jammed the bases up for Morgan whose single brought in one to make it 4-0. Adamo then reached on an error, bringing around two more runs. Iovenilli was later intentionally walked, bringing up who else but DiSilvio who made the Clippers pay with a 2-RBI knock.
A 2-RBI double from Iovinelli highlighted Lynnfield’s four-run 7th as they won going away to complete the season sweep over Newburyport.
Lynnfield will try to push their winning streak to five on Thursday when they host Essex Tech at 4 p.m.
