LYNNFIELD — Abby Lopez was the lone member of the Lynnfield High girls’ track and field team to make the Cape Ann League All-Star team. The junior made it in the two mile.
Last month, in the CAL Open at Triton, she captured 2nd place with a time of 11:36.14.
“That was an unbelievable time,” said Pioneers head coach Christine Smith. “It was her best time by 28 seconds.”
What was interesting is that Lopez was a CAL Second-Team All-Star last spring but it was in the javelin.
“She decided herself that she wanted to do the two mile this year,” pointed out Smith. “She was tremendous. I have never seen so much growth in one year.”
Last spring, Lopez competed in the discus and 800-meters as a sophomore. This season, she did the javelin and mile along with the two mile.
Lopez placed 12th in the MIAA Div. 5 Championship at Westfield State with a time of 11:57.04.
Lopez is also a member of the Pioneers’ indoor track and field team in the winter.
