LYNNFIELD — Last season, the Lynnfield High golf team went 3-8 as they tied for third place in the CAL Kinney Division.
Five seniors from that team graduated. Two of them were Cape Ann League All-Stars last fall as Paul Daley was a CAL First-Team All-Star while Owen Doherty was a CAL Second-Team All-Star.
When tryouts started last week, Pioneers long-time head coach Mike Moresco welcomed back seven veterans who saw at least some varsity action last season.
Three of those seven are this year’s tri-captains: Drew George is the team’s senior captain while Cam Dembro and Drew Carbone are the two junior captains.
George will open playing the third slot.
At the first slot is sophomore Max Sabbagh while junior Brady Cole is slotted second. Senior, Aidan Bird, will be the third-slotted player while fellow senior, CJ Patermo, enters this year at the number eight slot.
A junior who played on the junior varsity team last year, Sam Bird, will open the season as the ninth-slotted player.
Sam Bird and Aidan Bird are not related.
“We had a lot of players tryout,” said Moresco. “We don’t have a lot of experience but we do have a tremendous amount of potential. Of the kids that graduated last year, four of them were our top scorers.”
The schedule has changed this season as the league coaches voted to make a change. Where Lynnfield played each league team once regardless if they are in the Kinney or CAL Baker Division, they will now play home-and-home matches against the Kinney Division schools and play three Baker Division teams once.
This means that the Pioneers will play a 13-match schedule instead of 11.
Although school starts on Wednesday, the Pioneers opened the season on Tuesday as they took on host Essex Tech at Reedy Meadow in town (result not available at press time).
Lynnfield will then visit Haverhill Country Club on Thursday to face Pentucket at 3:30 p.m.
The home-opener at Sagamore Spring will be on Sept. 2 at 3 p.m. as they welcome Triton.
