Softball team falls to East Bridgewater 3-0 in Round of 16

EAST BRIDGEWATER — After upsetting Oxford in the MIAA Division 4 state tournament’s first round, the Lynnfield High softball team succumbed to host East Bridgewater, 3-0, in the Round of 16 on June 3.

With that loss, the 21st-seeded Pioneers ended up at 11-11. Meanwhile, 5th-seeded East Bridgewater lost at Joseph Case, 5-1, last Friday in the quarterfinals to end the year at 18-5.

The Pioneers were no-hit by pitchers Maggie Schlossberg and Mia Holmes. Schlossberg was relieved by Holmes the first inning after only four batters and she dominated striking out 17 of the 20 batters she faced.

“She wasn’t that fast but moved the ball so well,” said Pioneers head coach Hector Longo.” She was just awesome.”

Bella Abrams, with two hits, a walk and two runs scored and Olivia Atkins, who had two RBI led the Viking offense.

In the bottom of the first, Atkins’ ground out scored Abrams, who reached on a walk. Atkins had another ground out in the fifth that allowed Abrams to score to make it 2-0.

In the bottom of the sixth, Mackenzie Whitman singled to center field which scored Rylee McCarthy for the Vikings final run.

Lily Gately pitched the first inning giving up one run. Gia Gagnon pitched the final five frames and kept her squad in the game as she allowed one earned run, three hits, one walk and she struck out seven.

“Gia did a really good job in relief,” said Longo. “She has been a big help the second part of the season.”

Lynnfield did have five walks in the game led by Gagnon and Angela O’Hara who both walked twice.They had two threats with the bases loaded in the first and two runners on in the top of the sixth but Holmes was able to end both threats.
