Boys’ soccer team tops Newburyport, Triton

By STEPHEN MARTELLUCCI

LYNNFIELD — Last Friday afternoon, the Lynnfield High boys’ soccer team shut out Triton, 5-0, at home on a warm, sunny day. With the win, the Pioneers went 1-0-1 against the Vikings as the first game ended in a 1-1 draw back on Sept. 4.

The Pioneers’ record improved to 7-1-3 overall and 6-1-3 in the Cape Ann League.

“We are playing much better now than when we played them the first time,” said Pioneers head coach Brent Munroe, whose team led, 3-0, at halftime.

Midfielder, Rocco Scenna, was the star of this one as he had his first hat trick of the year. The Bowdoin College (Maine) bound senior also assisted on the two other goals.

“He is a tremendous player,” said Munroe, about the co-captain. “He was great in this game and we are going to need him to keep this up for the postseason.”

Scenna scored the first goal in the third minute unassisted. He then had a corner kick that was headed home by fellow senior co-captain Nate Zalvan, to make it 2-0 in the 12th minute.

In the 32nd minute, Scenna scored his second tally with senior Mohammed Ayari picking up the assist off a corner kick.

Junior John Powers then scored his first varsity goal in the eighth minute of the second half assisted by Scenna.

Scenna then got his hat trick later on in the second stanza with Ayari picking up his second assist. Scenna leads the team in goals with 12 in only 11 games.

Kellen Farias had his first start in goal and made two saves to record the shutout.

On Sept. 30, Lynnfield edged Newburyport, 2-1, at home. This is the second 2-1 win over the Clippers this fall as the first game took place back on Sept. 2 in the season opener on the road.

“I thought that they outplayed us the first time even though we won,” recalled Munroe. “This time, we were the better team.”

Midway through the first half, Scenna got hit by a shot attempt by Ayari and then was able to gather the ball and score.

The Clippers responded just two minutes later scoring off a corner kick to send the game to halftime knotted at one.

With just over 10 minutes later in the game, Scenna got the game winner on a pass from the right side by Brendan Reilly.

Pioneer senior goalkeeper, Dino Gesamondo, made seven saves to go to 6-1-2.

“This was a complete-team win,” stated Munroe. “The offense, defense and goalkeeping all played well.”

On Oct. 9, the Pioneers welcome Essex Tech in a night game that will start at 6 p.m. The Pioneers and Hawks had a scoreless tie in their first match-up back on Sept. 9 in Danvers.

On Oct. 14, the Pioneers host rival North Reading at 4:15 p.m. looking for a season split as the CAL Kinney Division leading Hornets won the first meeting, 1-0, back on Sept.18 under the lights.

The Pioneers entered this week ranked 13th in the MIAA Division 3 power rankings.

The top 32 teams in each division, regardless of record, automatically qualify for the state tournament at the end of the regular season.
