Mary Mahoney, 89

Avid skier who enjoyed traveling

WAKEFIELD — Mary Helen Mahoney, age 89, a longtime Wakefield resident passed peacefully at the Bear Hill Nursing Home on September 23. 

She was born in Melrose on January 8, 1936 and was the daughter of the late John Joseph and Margaret (Reardon) Mahoney. She was the dear sister of Ruth Mahoney of Wakefield; Anne Jarvis of FL; Rita Connell of Falmouth; and the late Kathleen “Kay” Walsh and John, Robert, Joseph and Francis Mahoney. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews and great great nieces and nephews. 

Mary was raised in Wakefield and grew up on Emerson St. As a girl, she took full advantage of her proximity to Lake Quannapowitt and enjoyed swimming and skating; she also enjoyed the benefit of the common and the playground there. Mary attended St. Joseph School and was a graduate of Wakefield High School, Class of 1955. She had worked for and retired from Delta Airlines and was able to extensively travel as a benefit of her employment. 

Mary was a devoted parishioner of St. Joseph Parish of Wakefield and attended Mass daily. Following the Mass, she and a group of women would go for coffee at Trackside, endearing themselves to the waitress, they earned the nickname “The Church Ladies.” The women met monthly and travelled together locally and even took European adventures together. Mary was an avid skier and belonged to “The Otter Ski Club” of North Conway. She enjoyed skiing at Wildcat Mountain and had a memorable ski trip to Italy.

Her funeral Mass will be celebrated in St. Joseph Church, 173 Albion St., Wakefield on Tuesday, September 30 at 10 a.m. There will be no visitation. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Wakefield Food Pantry, PO Box 1624, Wakefield, MA 01880. Mary volunteered time here and the cause was close to her heart.
