MELROSE — The Horace Mann Bike Bus has had a strong start to the spring season. After taking a break during the months of January and February, the bike bus started back up in March. A second route has been added for families that live on the south side of the school. The south side route begins at Linden Ave. and Bellevue Ave. The north side route and the south side route run on the same day, which is generally twice a month. Ridership is averaging about 50 students between the two routes, with an average of 15-20 adult volunteers riding alongside the students.
A bike bus is an organized group of children and parents riding bikes to school together along a set route. The goals of the bike bus are to teach bike/road safety from a young age, decrease car traffic, improve health and wellbeing, and to have FUN.
On Friday, April 4th, the Melrose Police Department joined the Horace Mann Bike Bus with a motorcycle escort and two MPD officers on bikes. Superintendent Adam Deleidi and Horace Mann principal, Milissa Churchill, also joined the ride. The community spirit was palpable and the bike bus invites any and all members of the community to join for a ride this spring!
Upcoming bike bus dates are April 11th, May 2nd, May 16th, May 30th, and June 13th.
