Americans look to bounce back after loss to Chiefs

By STEPHEN MARTELLUCCI

MALDEN — It was a rough night for the Melrose Americans baseball team on Monday night as they lost, 16-1, to the host Andre Chiefs at Maplewood Field in Malden.

It was the third consecutive loss for the team as they fell to fourth place in the Intercity League at 11-6-1.

The Chiefs, who are the defending league champions, improved to 12-5-1 .

Melrose is 1-1 against Andre as they beat them, 2-1, back on June 21.

“They hit the ball well and we didn’t,” said Americans manager Kevin Burgoyne. “It was just one of those nights.”

Melrose scored in the top of the first inning as Tad Giardina drew a bases-loaded walk. He ended up walking twice.

The Chiefs, who had 16 hits, then took command scoring three times in the bottom of the first.

Andre scored twice in the second and third innings to make it 7-1. They then plated four runs in the fourth and five more in the fifth.

Alex Parisi was the losing pitcher falling to 2-1. He lasted just two innings allowing seven runs (six earned), five hits, four walks and he struck out three.

The Americans had five hits as Nate Galanis had a triple while Shaun MacPhee doubled. Owen Duggan, Aidan Barry and Aidan Lynch all had singles.

The home game against the McKay Club slated for July 9 at home was rained out (make-up date unknown as of press time).

On July 21, Melrose hosts the Middlesex Expos. Two nights later, they welcome the Malden Maddogs.

Both of those games will start at 7:30 p.m. (admission is free).

On July 24, the Americans take on the Stoneham Sabres at Maplewood Park at 8 p.m.
