WOBURN—The Melrose High boy’s outdoor track team fell to rival Wakefield on April 16 at Woburn High by a score of 87-52.

Despite the loss, Melrose saw a great day by several athletes who swept the field in their events.

That included senior captain Caleb Barnes, who swept the field with first place finishes in both the mile and 2 mile. State champ Sam Madden also swept to an easy first place victory in the high jump. Emmanuel Guzman topped the entire ML in the javelin with a reach of 146-01.

And senior captain Brendan Radzik broke two personal records in the long jump and 200m dash and in the effort, topped all Middlesex League competition for first place finishes.

Melrose started the day with the 100m and saw victory by Radzik and a second place finish by Tyler Lecomte for a 1-2 sweep, a result they also duplicated in the 200m, for an overall great racing day.

Jonah Tully placed third in the 800m. Henry McCormack placed third in the 1 mile. Keegan Moloney placed second in discus. Nick Vasallo placed third in the high jump.

Melrose saw a good effort with the running of the 2-mile, with Barnes, Ben Dugan and Henry McCormack leading the pack.

In relays, Melrose edged Wakefield in the 4×100 behind the work of Tyler Lecomte, Matt Callahan, Rich Harrison and Rhys Mena. The 4×200 team of Jonah Tully, Ian McGrath, Collin Furrier and Elliot Barber was edged by the Warriors to finish the day.

Melrose looks to rebound this week when they battle Stoneham this Wednesday (post deadline) and will take on Watertown next Thursday at Lexington High.
