The City Hall Update

MELROSE — The City of Melrose is sharing the following updates for the upcoming week:

Overdose Awareness Week

The City of Melrose is participating in Overdose Awareness Week — a time to remember lives lost to overdose, raise awareness, and act. Learn more about preventing and ending overdose and find resources to help those affected: samhsa.gov/end-overdose. Overdose Awareness Week concludes on August 31, International Overdose Awareness Day.

Labor Day is September 1

All Melrose Public Schools and City Offices, except police and fire stations, will be closed on Monday, September 1, in observance of Labor Day. Trash and recycling will not be collected on September 1, and there will be a one-day delay in collection for the remainder of the week.

Slice of the City for Wards 1 & 3 next week

Meet your elected officials and enjoy a slice of pizza with your neighbors at a Slice of the City event near you! The pizza is free and funded privately and the meetup will be an informal opportunity for residents to connect with their elected officials, share questions and concerns, and get to know neighbors. With any questions or to request accommodations for these events, contact the Mayor’s Office at (781) 979-4440.

Residents of Ward 3 (the neighborhoods of Melrose around West Wyoming Avenue and West Foster Street) are invited to meet Mayor Grigoraitis and Ward 3 Councilor Robb Stewart over a slice of pizza at the Conant Park playground between 6 and 7 p.m. on Wednesday, September 3 and residents of Ward 1 (northwest portion of the City, also known as the Melrose Highlands) can join Mayor Grigoraitis, Ward 1 Councilor Manjula Karamcheti and City Council President Leila Migliorelli at the Roosevelt School playground between 6 and 7 p.m. on Thursday, September 4.

City Yard schedule

The Melrose City Yard is open for recycling and yard waste drop-off every Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday from 7:30 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. The Yard will be open from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, September 6.

Water flushing & hydrant

testing begins September 8

The City’s 2025 flushing program will begin on September 8 and will run through late October. This program is undertaken to improve water quality and to test and operate our water system’s valves and hydrants. Flushing hours are generally between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Please check www.cityofmelrose.org or call the Department of Public Works (DPW) at 781-665- 0142 to determine our daily list of streets to be flushed. The website will also be updated on flushing days, no later than 4 p.m., to reflect the completed streets and the following day’s anticipated schedule. Some streets may require re-listing for completion, so visit the website to check if your street is completed. Please call the DPW at 781-665-0142 if you have a special medical situation we should be aware of. We thank you for your patience during our biennial flushing program.
