Melrose enjoys first victory of season in 18-7 win

THE MELROSE High girls lacrosse team picked up a nice win over Marblehead last week and will face rival Wakefield on the road this Friday.

MELROSE—On Apr. 3, the Melrose High girls’ lacrosse team won its first game of the season as they beat visiting Marblehead, 18-7, at Fred Green Field. With that non-league victory, Melrose improved to 1-1.

This game was tight at the half as Melrose only led 8-7.

“We had a good burst of energy and started to win more draws in the second half,” pointed out Melrose second-year head coach Alicia Geiter.

Melrose senior captain Jill Frawley led the team in scoring with five goals, while Anna Mathews led the team in points with seven as she had four goals and three assists.

Chloe Arnold also found the back of the Magician net four times while Grace Daniels and Lauren Healy both had one goal and one assist.

Ella Daniels, Caty Dussault and Kelly Downes had the three other Melrose goals. For Dussalt, a freshman, and Downes, a sophomore, it was their first-career goals.

Melrose goalie Izzy Costello, made ten saves in net to go to 1-1.

The win comes after their season opener on April 1, when Melrose was nipped by guest Belmont 15-14, in a heartbreaker. The Marauders scored the game-winning goal on an eight-meters shot with one second left in the game. “This was a good lesson for the team,” said Geiter. “We came out slow in the first quarter.”

Belmont led 8-6 at half and then the game featured a couple of lead changes in the second half. Melrose came out strong in the second half with a 6-1 run but the visitors rebounded and tied the game late to set up the final-second heroics. Mathews led the Melrose attack with five goals and a pair of assists. Arnold had four goals and one assist while Frawley had three goals and three helpers as she recorded her 100th-career goal.

Grace Daniels recorded the other two goals, which were her first varsity ones.

Costello was very busy in net as she made 16 saves.

The next game for Melrose will be on Apr. 11 as they visit Wakefield at 4:15 pm. Melrose then welcomes Burlington on Apr. 15 with that game also starting at 4:15.
