MELROSE—The Melrose High girls varsity lacrosse team are a strong 5-2 on the season after a high-scoring, 18-14 victory over Lynnfield on Patriots Day morning on the road at Lynnfield High.
Things looked tough after the first quarter as the Pioneers (2-8) were up, 6-3, however Melrose outscored Lynnfield, 7-1, in the second quarter to go up 10-7 at the half. They then outscored the host, 8-7, in the second half.
“I think that our depth wore them out,” said Melrose head coach Alicia Geiter. “We got a nice burst of energy in the second quarter.”
Melrose’s Chloe Arnold led the team in scoring again, as the sophomore had nine points with six goals and three assists. Anna Mathews also had a big day as she had six goals and a pair of assists.
“They have been making some good connections,” pointed out Geiter, as each player had assists on the other’s goals.
Grace Daniels had a hat trick and one assist while Julia McNeely had two goals and one assist. Ella Daniels, Grace’s sister, had one goal and two assists.
Melrose goalie Izzy Costello made 12 saves in net to go to 5-2.
The news wasn’t as good last Saturday afternoon as Melrose fell at Billerica, 17-10, in another non-league game.
Melrose led, 9-6, before the wheels fell off in the second half as the Indians outscored them, 11-1, in the second stanza.
“We were mentally checked out in the second half,” admitted Geiter. “We were not connecting on offense in the second half and the defense got down on themselves after Billerica kept scoring.”
Arnold scored five times while Ella Daniels scored three. Mathews had one goal and one assist while Grace Daniels rounded out the scoring with one goal and one assist.
Costello turned back nine shots in net.
Melrose has three straight measuring stick games coming up on their schedule. On Apr. 25, they visit Reading at 4 pm. They then host non-league Wayland on Apr. 28 at 4:45 pm.
They return to Middlesex League action on Apr. 30 as they visit Lexington. That game will be under the lights s it will start at 6:30 pm.
