Girls’ lacrosse team earns Freedom Division title, gets ready for states
By STEPHEN MARTELLUCCI

MELROSE — The Melrose High girls’ lacrosse team ended the regular season on a high note on May 21 as they rolled over Watertown, 15-7, at home at Fred Green Field on a damp, chilly day. With that victory, Melrose finished at 13-4 overall and 8-3 in the Middlesex League.
They also captured their first Middlesex League Freedom division title since 2019 going 6-0.
“It is a huge deal for us,” said Melrose head coach Alicia Geiter, about winning the division. “It shows that we are an established program.”
Melrose led this one, 7-0, at the half as Watertown scored some goals in the fourth quarter to make the final more respectable.
Sophomore Chloe Arnold, the team’s top scorer, had five goals while Grace Daniels and Lauren Healy both scored twice.
Julia McNeely had one goal and two assists while Kelly Downs, Ella Daniels and Anna Mathews all had one goal and one assist.
Ruby Sterling and Jill Frawley had the final two goals.
Melrose goalie, Izzy Costello, made a season-high 17 saves in net to improve to 13-4. During the first half, she recorded her 150th save of her career.
“We gave her the game ball afterwards,” pointed out Geiter. “She was clutch, especially with the shutout in the first half.”
Melrose enters the MIAA Division 2 state tournament red-hot as that win was their seventh-straight. They last lost back on April 30 to Lexington.
“We are hitting our peak mentally,” said Geiter. “There is always things we can do better physically but the girls know how to win.”
Entering this week, Melrose was ranked 9th in the MIAA Division 2 power rankings. The seedings came on Wednesday afternoon as Melrose found out who they will open with at home in the opening round (opponent, date and time unknown as of press time).
