Swimmer medals at States in 100 free

BOSTON—The Melrose High boy’s swim team was well-represented in post season thanks to two Red Raiders who competed at the MIAA North Sectionals and MIAA Div. 2 State finals over the last two weeks.

On Feb. 20, Melrose saw two of their top swimmers, senior Andrew DiFiore and Ben Terentiyev represent the team at MIAA North Sectionals in several races. Terentiyev swam the 100 breast and 200 IM, placing 17th and 19th respectively. DiFiore also had a solid day with a 12th place finish in the 100 free and a 12th finish in the 50 free.

DiFiore had qualified to advance to the Div. 2 State Finals held on Feb. 27 at Boston University. There he competed with all of the best swimmers in Div. 2 in the 100 freestyle race. In the race, he certainly went the distance, finishing 6th in the state in the 100 free with a time of 49.42. That was good enough to land him on the podium with competition from Longmeadow, Weston and Scituate.

His coach Alex Pennachio lauded his effort and DiFiore’s overall swim journey. “This meet and this medal are really the perfect way for Andrew to wrap up his swimming career,”  he says. “He’s put so much effort both in and out of the pool to be able to swim at such a high level. It’s no surprise to see him have this success.”
