MELROSE — First created in 2017 through a citywide design contest for the Human Rights Commission, the “Melrose: One Community Open to All” logo became a symbol of equity, safety, and pride in our shared community. The logo now appears on window clings and buttons throughout Melrose to visibly share the community’s commitment to inclusion of our LGBTQ+ friends, family, and neighbors.
The original logo was designed by Melrose resident, parent, and professional, freelance graphic artist Bo Tsang DiMatteo, whose artwork was selected for its warmth, clarity, and message of belonging. “Ever since my family moved to Melrose, I have felt that the city welcomed us with open arms,” Bo shared. “When the Melrose Human Rights Commission and the City held the contest, I jumped at the opportunity to show my love and pride for Melrose. I wanted to create a symbol that sends a clear message: Melrose is a place where we rise up for equality with One Heart Melrose.”
In 2023, Chiara Pieri, freelance illustrator and Program Coordinator at Follow Your Art Community Studios, added a vibrant rainbow motif to Bo’s design in celebration of Melrose’s Annual Pride event. “I grew up in Melrose and Bo’s original design is absolutely iconic, and it reflects so much of the positive growth and change I’ve seen in Melrose over my lifetime. I was really excited that the HRC reached out to me about the rainbow addition.” This creative collaboration between two local artists has helped the logo grow into a living, evolving emblem that continues to reflect the city’s values and diverse spirit.
The updated logo is available on t-shirts through MelrosePride.org, and window clings for cars and storefronts can be found at Buckalew’s General Store. Together, Bo and Chiara have created more than a design—they’ve given Melrose a living symbol of pride to represent our ongoing commitment to being one community, open to all.
