Best score of season against Stoneham
By JENNIFER GENTILE
SAUGUS—The Melrose High gymnastics team improved to 4-3 following their best effort to date against Stoneham on Friday, Jan 28 at the Saugus YMCA where they beat the Spartans by a season high total of 137.9-131.3. Melrose has a big meet against rival Wakefield this Friday night, a team who beat the Red Raiders last season but, at 3-3, could be edged out now by a competitive and consistent Melrose team who is showing depth in each rotation.
Melrose topped the Spartans in every event, save the beam, and were led in All Around efforts by Lucy Hannon and Grace Burke. Melrose enjoyed a top score of the night courtesy of Lucy Hannon in beam (9.2) while Katherine Carney also earned a 9.0 in the vault.
Melrose started the night with another great effort in the vault with a total of 34.8-33.6, thanks to the work of Taylor Pesce, Lucy Hannon, Sofia Pitcher, Owen Mistretta, Grace Burke (8.) and Katherine Carney, who topped the event 9.0.
Melrose also performed consistently in the bars behind the work of Maya Weissman, Katelyn Plourde, Sofia Pitcher, Grace Burke and Lucy Hannon and Isabella Ferranti who both topped the event with scores of 8.9. Stoneham fought back in the beam with excellent scores of 9.2 and 9.5 that would top them over Melrose in the event, but that was balanced by the work of Melrose’s Katelyn Plourde, Grace Gentile, Isabella Ferranti, Katherine Carney, Grace Burke and Lucy Hannon, who topped Melrose’s score with a 9.2.
Melrose finished the night in the floor with tremendous work across the board from Sofia Pitcher, Taylor Pesce, Isabella Ferranti, Katherine Carney, Grace Burke and Lucy Hannon, who topped the night with a 8.9.
Look for tonight’s action against rival Wakefield to start at 7:15 p.m. at the Saugus YMCA.
