MELROSE—For those looking to transition from walking to running, the Melrose Running Club (MRC) is set to launch its 26th annual “Walk to Run” program, offering a structured and supportive introduction to the sport. The ten-week program begins on Tuesday, April 22, at 7 PM, starting from the Melrose Knights of Columbus on West Foster Street.

Registration for the program will open at 6:30 PM on the first day, followed by a shoe clinic led by Marathon Sports of Melrose. This educational session will help participants select the right footwear to ensure a comfortable and injury-free running experience.

Designed for beginners, the Walk to Run program is modeled after nationally recognized training plans and aims to help participants develop the endurance to run continuously for 30 minutes by the end of ten weeks. Throughout the program, MRC members will provide articles and tips on running techniques, shoe selection, and nutrition to support participants in their journey.

Participants should be in good physical health, and it is recommended to consult a physician before starting. Additionally, applicants should be capable of walking continuously for 30 minutes and are encouraged to prepare their legs with eight days of pre-program walking: 20 minutes for the first four days and 30 minutes for the remaining four.

The cost of the program is $30, which includes a 2025 individual membership to the Melrose Running Club. Interested individuals can find more information and register by visiting the Walk to Run page on the MRC website at www.melroserunningclub.com.

In addition to the Walk to Run program, the Melrose Running Club welcomes runners of all abilities to join their regular Tuesday evening runs at 7 PM from the Melrose Knights of Columbus. These group runs offer distances ranging from 3 to 7 miles in a fun and inclusive environment. MRC is a proud member of the Road Runners Club of America (RRCA), continuing its mission of promoting running as a healthy and enjoyable activity within the community.

For those looking to take the first step towards becoming a runner, MRC’s Walk to Run program provides the perfect opportunity to do so in a welcoming and structured setting.
