MELROSE — Here’s a roundup of news that was shared by the City of Melrose in the past week.
Call 911 if you need it: In one of his video updates, Mayor Brodeur stressed that anyone experiencing symptoms of a stroke, heart attack, or other emergency should call 911. Many people are avoiding hospitals because of the pandemic, but if they delay getting help for a medical emergency, their treatment may not be as successful. Hospitals are prepared to keep non-COVID-19 patients safe so please do not hesitate to call 911 if you are having symptoms of a serious condition.
Yard waste pickup: DPW will pick up yard waste as scheduled during the week of May 4. There is a maximum of 10 bags per household.
Schools are closed but classes go on: As you probably know by now, Governor Baker has ordered that all schools will be closed for the remainder of the school year. We know our students and educators are disappointed that they will not be back together. While our buildings are closed, school will continue.
Sewer work: The City of Melrose’s Public Works Department has started the third phase of its sanitary sewer investigation program. The purpose of the project is to identify problem areas of the sewer system that are in need of rehabilitation and/or repair in an effort to prevent infiltration from entering into the pipes.
For the next few weeks, crews from Inland Waters, Inc. of Johnston R.I., will be present in certain neighborhoods of the city during both daytime hours and between the hours of 11 p.m. and 7 a.m. A representative from Weston & Sampson Engineers, Inc., our wastewater consultant, and/or a representative from the City will also be present during the work. Please check out the city website for more information including a list of streets where this work will take place during the spring.
Keep Melrose Beautiful: Thank you to the many volunteers who went out and picked up litter on Earth Day. We are looking forward to organizing bigger events as circumstances allow, but we always encourage everyone to keep Melrose clean. Be sure to follow Keep Melrose Beautiful on Facebook to learn what’s coming up.
In closing, please continue to stay home as much as possible, practice social distancing, wear face coverings, wash your hands frequently, and clean and disinfect surfaces regularly. Together, we will get through this.
