A strong woman with an independent spirit
BRADENTON, Fla. — On Saturday, February 12, 2022 the Lord called home Esther Frances McGurn who passed peacefully while at a Hospice House in Bradenton, Florida surrounded by family. She was weeks shy of her 98th birthday.
Esther was born in Haverhill and raised in the Fields Corner section of Dorchester. She was a middle child of David and Nellie Leahy and was predeceased by her seven siblings: John Leahy, Margaret Edmunds, Joseph Leahy, Eleanor Leahy, Edward Leahy, William Leahy and Patricia Loveridge.
Esther was married for 52 years to the late Edward J. McGurn. They resided in Melrose their entire married life and leave behind four children: Diane O’Callaghan, Jacquelyn Doerrer Mullen, James McGurn and John McGurn; as well as her son in law James Mullen; two grandsons Ryan O’Callaghan and Stan Doerrer, and Stan’s wife Sarah; two great grandchildren Colton and Wesley, and many nephews and nieces.
Esther was a hard worker and retired from the Federal government. Once retired from there, she worked and retired from the MBTA where she drove the buses and later was in the token booth. She loved her jobs.
Beside enjoying time with family, dabbling in real estate and taking long rides, she relished visiting the Hilltop Steak House, watching golf, and football; doing word search games, reading the Sunday paper from front to back and having a good laugh.
Esther’s later years were spent in Florida with her youngest son John who cared for her. She was loved by many and will be missed by those who knew her.
