BOSTON — The Lynnfield High boys’ indoor track and field team placed 8th out of 10 teams in the Cape Ann League Meet at the Track at New Balance in Brighton on Feb. 4.

“Overall, I was happy with the results,” said Pioneers head coach Christine Smith, whose squad finished with 39 points. “Shea, (McCarthy) who does our mile and two mile, was sick and didn’t run as well as he normally would.”

North Reading came in first with 91 points.

The top eight in each event score points while the top three in each event are named to the all-conference team.

Eli Mendese led the way for the locals. The senior was 1st in the high jump (6-4), 2nd in the long jump (21-00.50) and 5th in the shot-put (41-7).

“He was also named the CAL Baker Division Athlete of the Year,” pointed out Smith. “He was spectacular and had personal-bests in all three of those events.”

Fellow senior, Mike Murphy, scored twice as he was 2nd in the high jump (5’10”) and 8th in the long jump with a personal-best 18’6”.

Another senior, Dillon Reilly, captured 6th in the high jump at 5’8”.

Reilly and Mendese are both going to Trinity College this fall.

Two Pioneer relay teams also scored points.

The 4×200 team of Reilly, his brother Brendan, Jessie Dorman and Charlie Morgan came in 4th with a time of 1:36.29.

“They just missed third by .004 seconds,” pointed out Smith.

The 4×400 team of Jacob Book, Murphy, Joel Attubato and Nick Groussis placed 8th at 4:02.59.

The next event for the team will be on Feb. 16 at the MIAA Division 5 Indoor Track and Field Championships.

That event will be held at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston and will start at 1 p.m.

In the regular season, the Pioneers came in 2nd place to Amesbury in the CAL Baker Division as they were 3-1.
