LYNNFIELD — Two members of the Lynnfield High boys’ indoor track and field team were named to the Cape Ann League All-Star team this season.

The two Pioneers to make the team are seniors Eli Mendese and Mike Murphy.

For Mendese, it was his second year in a row making the team as he made it this winter in the high jump and long jump.

He was also named the CAL Baker Division male athlete of the year.

“That athlete of the year is very special because it is voted on by the league coaches,” pointed out Pioneers head coach Christine Smith. “I don’t have enough words to say what he has meant to the team. He sets a great example and is also a good person who earned the honor.”

Mendese, who will be going to Trinity College this fall, was second in the high jump (6-2), and sixth in the long jump (20-2) in the MIAA  Division 5 Indoor Track and Field Championships last month.

MIKE MURPHY

For Murphy, a four-year team member, it was his first time making the All-Star team as he made it in the high jump. He came in 7th in that event, at 5-10, in the MIAA  Division 5 Indoor Track and Field Championships.

“He is a lacrosse player in the spring time so this was a great way for him to end his track and field career,” said Smith. “He had a fantastic year and is one of our most versatile athletes as he also did the long jump and our relays.”

This season was a solid one for the team as  the Pioneers came in 2nd place to Amesbury in the CAL Baker Division going 3-1.

In the MIAA Division 5 Indoor Track and Field Championships, the Pioneers captured 12th place out of over 40 schools participating.
