In six inning, rain shortened ICL contest

LEXINGTON — The rain won out on Friday night at Lexington High School as the Wakefield Merchants and Lexington Blue Sox could only get six innings played in their Intercity League game. As a result, the contest ended in a 3-3 tie.
Wakefield increased its record to 3-8-1, while Lexington is now 8-4-1 in the ICL standings. The Blue Sox are in fourth place in the standings while the Merchants are in eighth and last place.
For the Merchants, it is their second straight game without a loss. Also earning a point against the powerful Blue Sox and is somewhat of a victory for the locals.
Lexington scored all three of its runs in the fourth inning and Wakefield rallied for all three of its runs in the top of the sixth inning.
Steve Keskinidis hurled six innings for the Merchants giving up three runs on seven hits while striking out five and walking two.
Meanwhile, Lexington used two pitchers over the six inning, rain shortened contest.
Jimmy Hill pitched five and two-thirds innings giving up three runs on nine hits. He also threw a wild pitch.
Bill Christopher hurled a third of an inning striking out a batter.
The Merchants had nine hits total with Mike Sorrentino leading the way with three hits. He also scored a run and drove in a run.
Louis Tarantino also had a multiple hit game with two. One of those hits was a double. He also scored a run and stole a base.
Scott Searles, Chris Butler, Mark Poli and Brendan Barry each had a hit. Searles and Butler also drove in runs. Searles scored a run as well.
Lexington had seven hits with Justin Silvestro leading the way with two. One of those hits was a triple. He also drove in a run.
Getting single hits for the Blue Sox were Julian Alverez, Alex Voitik, John Puttress, Thomas Russo and Josh Hassell. Alvarez’s and Voitik’s hits were doubles.
Ryan McCarthy, Puttress, and Hassell scored the three Lexington runs. Hassell also knocked in a run.
Dorian Rojas and Puttress also drew walks from Keskinidis.
Wakefield returns from the holiday break tomorrow night at 6 p.m. when they host the Arlington Trojans at Walsh Field.
