WAKEFIELD — The latest power rankings released by the MIAA on Tuesday had multiple Wakefield High teams near the top of their respective divisions. A new set of rankings were set to be released today after press time at MIAA.net.

The Warrior softball, boys’ lacrosse and baseball teams are all ranked in the top 10 as the spring sports season officially moved past the halfway point this week.

The softball team currently has the highest ranking at WMHS as they are 6th in Div. 2. Their eight-game winning streak was finally snapped by Lexington last Friday in a 5-2 decision. The Minutemen are ranked No. 22 in Div. 1, so the loss won’t affect Wakefield’s ranking much. The Warriors beat Melrose 13-0 on Wednesday and will host Belmont (7-3, No. 26 in D1) today at 4:15 p.m. They host Newton North (8-3, No. 14 in D1) tomorrow at 10 a.m.

The top five softball teams in D2 are Silver Lake (10-1), Hopkinton (10-3), Tewksbury (10-3), Bedford (9-1) and Plymouth South (7-3).

The boys’ lacrosse team (9-2) is ranked No. 7 in Div. 3. Wakefield’s perfect 9-0 start was broken up by Middlesex League and state powers Winchester (9-4, No. 9 in D1) and Reading (9-2, No. 6 in D2) last week. The Warriors hosted Lexington (6-7, No. 24 in D1) last night after press time. Danvers (5-8, No. 35 in D3) visits Landrigan Field tomorrow at 10 a.m.

The six boys’ lacrosse teams ahead of Wakefield in D3 are Medfield (11-1), Dracut (9-2), Falmouth (8-3), Nauset (8-4), Scituate (10-3) and Newburyport (10-1).

The baseball team (9-3) was ranked No. 8 in the latest Div. 3 power rankings. The Warriors have won six of their last seven games after yesterday’s victory over Stoneham. Wakefield hosts Winthrop (1-11) tomorrow at 3 p.m. before a huge matchup against rival Melrose on Monday, 4:15 p.m. at Walsh Field. Melrose (8-5, No. 9 in D2) won the first game, 5-1 on April 11. The seven teams ahead of Wakefield in D3 are St. Mary’s (13-1), Weston (10-1), Bishop Stang (9-2), North Reading (10-1), Auburn (12-1), Norwell (8-3) and Shawsheen Tech (12-0).

The boys’ tennis team (4-5) is ranked No. 20 in Div. 3. Wakefield won four of five against fellow Freedom Division opponents before hitting their current losing streak of three against strong, Liberty Division teams. Wakefield will rematch Melrose (4-8, No. 33 in D2) tonight, 5:30 p.m. at the Dobbins Courts. The Warriors won the first matchup, 3-2 on April 11.

The top five boys’ tennis teams in D3 are Martha’s Vineyard (8-0), Bedford (7-2), Medfield (6-1), Newburyport (5-1) and Weston (2-3).

The girls’ lacrosse team (5-8) recently moved up in the Div. 3 power rankings to No. 25. The Warriors beat Winchester (7-5, No. 27 in D1) for the first time in program history, 10-8 on April 30. Wakefield has since fallen to Reading (11-2, No. 3 in D2) and Wilmington (8-7, No. 29 in D3). The Wildcats won, 11-6 at Landrigan Field on Monday. Wakefield travels to Lexington (11-1, No. 11 in D1) today at 4:15 p.m.

The Wakefield girls’ tennis and boys’ volleyball teams are currently outside of the top 32 required to automatically qualify for the state tournament.

Track and field teams are not power ranked by the MIAA but Wakefield’s girls’ and boys’ teams are both off to strong starts with the boys at 3-0 and the girls at 2-1. Their meets against Burlington scheduled for Tuesday this week were rained out. A makeup date has yet to be announced. They will both face Watertown on Wednesday, 4 p.m. at Burlington High.
