Netmen get back on track with victory over Amesbury

AMESBURY — The Lynnfield High boys’ tennis team snapped its three-match losing streak on Monday afternoon as they blanked host Amesbury, 5-0, on a sunny warm, day on Monday afternoon. 

With the victory, the Pioneers improved to 9-3 overall and 6-3 in the Cape Ann League. 

Shea McCarthy won, 6-1, 6-2, at first singles while Shlok Kudrimoti won, 6-0, 6-3 at second singles. 

Third singles player, Brady Trippe, also won in straight sets, 6-0, 6-4. 

In doubles action, the first team of Raffi Arkun and Matt Reinold won 6-1, 6-1. The second team of Emile Coulmans and Ash Mahajan won 6-4, 7-5. 

“I was so happy to be back in the win column,” said Pioneers head coach Joe Dunn. “It was a tough week and a half for us.”

On May 8, the Pioneers lost at Manchester-Essex 4-1. 

McCarthy won at first singles, 7-5, 6-4.

Kudrimoti fell, 6-1, 6-0 at second singles. Reinold played third singles and he lost, 6-3, 6-4. 

In doubles play, the first duo if Arkun and Andee Shieh lost, 7-5, 6-2, while the second pairing of Rishabh Anand and Ritvik Mahajan also fell in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1. 

Last year, the Hornets beat the Pioneers in the Division 4 state finals 3-2.

“They are a consistent, strong team,” said Dunn. “They are solid their entire lineup.” 

On May 7, the Pioneers lost to Newburyport, 3-2, at home. 

It was the second time in six days that the Clippers have beaten the Pioneers as the Clippers now have a stronghold on first place in the CAL Kinney Division that the Pioneers have won the past six seasons.

McCarthy, won with matching, 6-1, scores. Kudrimoti was the other winner at second singles winning, 6-3, 6-2. 

Anand lost a close one at third singles, 7-6 (7-3 in the tiebreaker), 7-5. 

Arkun and Reinold fell, 7-6, (7-5 in the tiebreaker), 6-4, at first doubles while Rowan Bayer and Shieh lost in three sets at second doubles. They lost the first set, 6-1, but won the second one, 6-2. However, they fell, 6-3, in the final set.

“Third singles and second doubles could have went our way,” pointed out Dunn. “It was another close 3-2 match like the week before.” 

The match at North Reading scheduled for May 9 was rained out and will be made up on May 15 at 4 p.m.

On May 14, the Pioneers visit Pentucket at 3:30 p.m. They will then travel to Malden to take on Mystic Valley on May 16 with that match starting at 4 p.m.

On May 20, the Pioneers host Rockport at 3:30 p.m.

That is the team’s Senior Day as the six Pioneer seniors will be honored before the match.
