Laxmen get back on track with 13-4 victory over Triton

By STEPHEN MARTELLUCCI

NORTH READING —  On a wet, raw evening on Tuesday, the North Reading High boys’ lacrosse team knocked off visiting Triton, 13-4 to sweep the season series over the Vikings.

The win snapped the Hornets’ five-game losing streak as they improved to 6-6 overall and 4-5 in the Cape Ann League.

“We played sloppy at times but played well in transition,” said Hornets head coach Chuck Campobasso.

North Reading led, 8-2, at the half as they slowly pulled away in the second half.

PJ Conte led the offense with four goals and one assist. Dylan O’Driscoll  had three goals and a pair of assists while Brendan Gazda had three goals and one helper.

Anthony Tammaro scored twice to go with one assist while Finn Rodger had the one goal and two assists.

The Wesley brothers, Jackson and Gavin, each had one assist while Owen Phillips also had one assist.

Hornet goalie David Tran made 12 saves to go to 5-5 as he played three quarters. Tripp Harrington mopped up in net in the fourth quarter and made five stops.

On May 2, the Hornets fell to rival Lynnfield, 11-9, at home.

This game was tight throughout as it was knotted at five at halftime. The Pioneers took the lead early in the third quarter and then held on as they scored with a little over three minutes left in the fourth to make it 11-9.

“That was the best we have played all week,” said Campobasso, despite the loss. “I felt good the way we performed. Lynnfield has some very talented players but we hung in with them.”

Jackson Wesley led the offense in this game with three goals and two assists. Tammaro scored twice while O’Driscoll had one goal and two assists.

Gazda had one goal and one assist while Rodger and Conte had the two other Hornet goals.

Tran made seven saves in that game.

On April 30, North Reading lost, 16-3, to Newburyport as the Clippers completed the season sweep.

Newburyport won the first meeting, 15-2, on April 2.

“We didn’t play near anywhere that we are capable of playing,” recalled Campobasso. “They have a very good team and we didn’t compete.”

The Clippers took command of this game in the opening half as they led, 11-3, at the break.

O’Driscoll, Gazda and Rodger had the three Hornet goals in this one.

Tran made eight stops in net.

On Saturday, the Hornets host Medford in a non-league game. That contest will start at 10 a.m.

North Reading then returns to CAL action on May 13 as they visit Manchester-Essex at 4:30 p.m.

Entering this week, the Hornets were seeded 18th in the MIAA Division 4 power rankings. The top 32 teams at the end of the regular season automatically qualify for the tournament regardless of their record.
