NORTH READING — North Reading High School was recently awarded the annual Cape Ann League Hyland Trophy for the 2019-20 academic year.

It is the fifth Hyland Trophy in the last six years for North Reading. The Hornets won four in a row from 2014-15 to 2017-18.

The Hyland Trophy is awarded to one CAL program that combines academics and athletics in a unique way. It is based on three components: grade point average, as each team must have a collective 3.0; sportsmanship ratings from other teams; and overall winning percentage.

The wide scope of the Hyland Trophy is what makes it prestigious. It means total dedication from all student-athletes and coaches, making it a 24-team award.

“This award is a great tribute to the coaches and teachers at NRHS,” said Athletic Director David Johnson. “We do all three (components of the award) very well at NRHS and I want to take this opportunity to thank the coaches, teachers, administrators and parents of our student-athletes for all your support and leadership.

“We also have some pretty terrific athletes that represent their town and high school with pride and commitment. Thank you all for being Hornets.”

The student-athletes from the Class of 2020 will graduate with three Hyland Trophies during their four years.
