NORTH READING — Learn to paint like Rufus Porter, the famous 19th century New England folk artist, in the same ballroom where he painted almost 200 years ago!

The day-long workshop, on Saturday, May 10, is sponsored by the North Reading Historical Commission. It is held in the second floor ballroom of the Damon Tavern on Bow Street where Rufus Porter painted scenic landscape murals around 1830.

Surrounded by Porter’s historic murals, students learn about the methods and techniques he employed to create scenic folk art landscapes. Students come from all over New England and beyond to attend these fun and creative workshops, and each student goes home with a beautiful painting in the style of Rufus Porter! This workshop is for adults of all painting abilities. Prior painting experience is not needed!

The Paint Like Porter workshop is a fundraising event for the North Reading Historical and Antiquarian Society with proceeds going toward the continued restoration of the Rufus Porter ballroom.  Local folk artist, Suzanne Korn, leads this workshop from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

The Donation/Fee is $135 and includes all supplies for you to complete a folk art landscape in the tradition of Rufus Porter.
