Hornet harriers fall to Vikings, get ready for CAL Open

NEWBURY — Despite a tremendous effort from both squads, the North Reading High School Hornet cross country teams fell to rival Triton on a tough course in Newbury by scores of 18-38 in the boys’ race and 24-31 in the girls’ race.

In the girls’ race, the Hornets were led by the trio of junior Quinlan Kelly (3rd, 22:49), sophomore Adelyn Kelly (4th, 23:54) and sophomore Riley MacDonald (5th, 24:06), who put the Hornets in contention for the meet.

Freshman Chloe DeAngelis (9th, 26:41), senior co-captain Vanessa Steinmeyer (10th, 26:52), 8th grader Ruby Davidson (12th, 29:39), 8th grader Verity Modeen (13th, 29:41), senior Cybele Miller (14th, 30:02), freshman Reki Bergen-Aki (16th, 39:50) and junior Miriana Bornstein (17th, 39:58) rounded out the Hornet competitors.

“We gave Triton a real competitive race today,” said Hornets head coach Ryan Spinney. “Our team stepped up on a tough course against a tough and well-coached team. We are very proud of their efforts today.”

The loss dropped the Hornets to 1-3 on the season.

In the boys’ race, sophomore Nalo Benedict (4th, 20:31), senior co-captain Alex Mitasev (6th, 20:39) and sophomore Connor Abruzzese (10th 22:30) got top 10 finishes for the Hornets in the race.

Senior Aidan Kennedy (12th, 22:42), senior co-captain Raffi Toby (13th, 22:45), senior Dawson Duffley (15th, 22:57), sophomore Jacob Ye (17th, 23:37), freshman Charlie Sarno (18th, 23:51), freshman Cole Donohue (20th, 24:06), 8th grader Dominic Spada (23rd, 24:42), senior Michael Mahoney (24th, 26:42) and senior Aidan Seaman (26th, 29:50) rounded out the Hornet competitors.

“Lots of solid efforts across the board today for us. Up front, Nalo, Alex and Connor really made improvements and pushed the Triton pack. We are very pleased at the results and look forward to the CAL Open,” said Spinney.

The loss dropped the Hornets to 0-4 on the season.

The CAL Open Championship will take place on Saturday, Oct. 26 at the Wrentham Developmental Center and that will mark the end of the CAL season slate.
