NORTH READING — The North Reading High golf team was edged, 159-151, by visiting Pentucket at Hillview Golf Course on Monday afternoon.
With that defeat, the Hornets fell to 0-4 on the year.
“The kids are taking it in stride,” said Hornets second-year head coach Jon Kiniry. “We lost so many players from last year’s team and have five new starters this season.”
Captain Conrad Gerber led the team in scoring (Stableford scoring) with 32 points. Another senior captain, Leo Romanski, was second with 27 points while Brendan Gazda was third with 25 points.
On Sept. 4, the team suffered another close loss as they fell, 159-155, to guest Lynnfield.
“That one was a nail-biter,” recalled Kiniry.
Gerber led the team is scoring in this one as well with 29 points while junior Noah Salvatierra was right behind him with 28. Dylan Harris was third with 27 points.
On Sept. 2, the Hornets lost to host Essex Tech, 185-177, at Reedy Meadow in Lynnfield.
“They did a great job of defending their home course,” said Kiniry, about the Hawks.
Reedy Meadow is the easiest course in the Cape Ann League and the Hornets still lost despite having three golfers who scored at least 34 points.
Gerber had 38 as he shot under par. Brayden Carlson had a very good round with 35 while Romanski scored 34.
The Hornets, who have lost three of their matches by under 10 points, go to Essex Country Club on Sept. 11 to take on host Manchester-Essex.
North Reading then goes to Rowley County Club on Sept. 15 to face Newburyport. Both of those matches will start at 3:30 p.m.
