SOUTH HAMILTON — On Tuesday afternoon, the North Reading High golf team suffered its first loss of the season as they fell to host Hamilton-Wenham, 161-154, at the Myopa Hunt Club.

With the defeat, the Hornets record dropped to 7-1.

“That course is the best home-course advantage in the Cape Ann League,” stated Hornets head coach Jon Kiniry, about the prestigious private club. “It is very difficult and only four or five of our players have actually played it before.”

Tom Gazda led the Hornets in scoring (Stableford) with 30 points while Stephen Desisle was second with 28.

Conrad Gerber and Jason Curran both scored 25 points while Liam Talbert and Leo Romanski both had 23 points to round out the top six scores.

“They have a very good team,” said Kiniry, about the Generals, who improved to 8-1.

The day before, the news was much better as the Hornets beat guest Amesbury, 164-137, on Senior Day at Hillview Golf Club on  a pleasant, warm, sunny day.

“It was a great day for the seniors,” said Kiniry, as all eight seniors competed in the match.

Romanski led the way with 30 points while Gazda had 29.

The four other scorers were Desisle (28), Max Forristall  (28), Talbert  (26) and Curran (25).

“All six players were consistent,” pointed out Kiniry, as the top six scorers were all within five points of each other.

Before the match, the eight Hornet 12th-graders were honored as it was the team’s final home match.

On Sept. 24, the Hornets broke the school record for points in a match as they defeated host Essex Tech, 199-179, at Reedy Meadow in Lynnfield.

“We took advantage of a shorter course and the greens were very good there,” said Kiniry.

All six scorers were over 30 points on the par-34 course.

Forristall led the way with 36 shooting even par while Romanski and Talbert both scored 34. Curran and Liam Blanchette both scored 32 while Gazda had 31.

The match at Lynnfield at Sagamore Spring scheduled for Sept. 26 was rained out and will be made up on Oct. 7 at 3:30 p.m.

North Reading’s next match will be on Oct. 3 as they travel to Haverhill Country Club to take on Pentucket at 3:30 p.m. On Oct. 9t they take on Ipswich at Ipswich County Club with that match also starting at 3:30 p.m.
