Hornet harriers end season with 10th place effort at CAL Open

WRENTHAM — The North Reading High School Cross Country team completed its league schedule last Saturday afternoon, as they competed in the Cape Ann League Open Championship at Wrentham Developmental Center on a very warm October day. The Hornets competed hard and finished 10th overall in the team standings for both the girls and boys teams.

The girls finished with 250 points and the boys finished with 277 points.

“We are definitely not just what the scoreboard said today,” said Hornets Head Coach Ryan Spinney. “Regardless if they competed in Varsity or JV today, our athletes competed hard and gave it their very best. We are very happy with how we performed and we are looking forward to the Division 3A state race in two weeks.”

Kelly finishes 11th, earns CAL All League Runner Status

Sophomore Quinlan Kelly was the top Hornet competitor in the meet, as she finished 11th overall in a time of 21:26.5 in the Varsity Girls 5k Championship, an effort that makes her an All League Runner for the 2023. “Quin is so incredibly deserving of this honor and to see her earn it against some of the very best runners in the state is a true reflection of her dedication to the sport,” said Spinney. “The amazing thing is she is only a sophomore and she is just getting started.”

Senior Stella DaSilva was the second overall Hornet to finish as she placed 57th overall in a time of 26:09.0. Senior co-captain Alison Koenig (60th, 26:33.0), Freshman Riley MacDonald (61st, 27:06.9), Junior Vanessa Steinmeyer (65th, 29:01.3) and Senior Sophie Saquet (68th, 31:36.4) rounded out the Hornet competitors in the meet.

On the boys’ side, Junior Nicolas Johnson was the top Hornet to finish in the Boys race as he placed 42nd overall in a time of 19:56.2. Junior co-captain Alexander Mitasev was 49th overall in a time of 20:13.8. Sophomore Cole Fabrizio (57th, 20:36.1), Sophomore Gerard Jorda (64th, 21:50.2), Junior Dawson Duffley (65th, 21:53.2), Senior Dylan Zecher (66th, 22:01.3) and Junior Raffi Toby (70th, 22:55.6) rounded out the Hornet competitors.

“We ran very well today, especially Alex, Cole and Dylan,” said Spinney. “As we always do, we compete hard and do what we can. Lots to build on for the state meet and for next season as all but one of these runners will be back next fall.”

In the JV Boys race, Freshman Connor Abruzzese led the way with a 41st place finish in a time of 22:48.2. Junior Michael Mahoney (62nd, 24:12.6), Junior co-captain David Wyatt (67th, 24:25.3), Junior Aidan Seaman (87th, 30:00.3) and Sophomore Benjamin Russell (89th, 31:03.3) rounded out the Hornets in that event.

The Hornets will now compete in the Massachusetts Division 3A State Championship on Saturday, November 11 at Northfield Mountain in Northfield, MA. Good Luck, Hornets!
