LYNNFIELD — It was a showdown between the top two teams in the Cape Ann League Kinney Division on Tuesday afternoon when the North Reading High boys’ soccer team visited Lynnfield on a wet, cool day.

In the first meeting on Sept. 18, the Hornets won, 1-0, at home. The Pioneers were able to avenge that loss as they won 1-0 to return the favor.

The lone goal came with just over three minutes remaining in the game as the Pioneers headed in a corner kick.

“We controlled the game most of the way but couldn’t finish off our chances,” said Hornets head coach Mark Bisognano. “We had three really good chances in the second half.”

With that result, the teams are now tied for first place in the CAL Kinney as the Hornets record fell to 9-2-2 overall and 8-2-2 in the league.

The Pioneers record, meanwhile, improved to 9-1-4 overall and 8-1-4 in the Cape Ann League.

“Both teams are very evenly-matched,” said Bisognano. “There is a chance we could see them again in the tournament.”

Lynnfield moved from Division 4 to Division 3 this year.

Hornets goalkeeper Dylan O’Driscoll made three saves.

On Oct. 9, the Hornets hammered Triton, 8-0, at home on a cool, sunny day. With that victory, the Hornets swept the Vikings this fall as they won the first meeting, 3-0, back on Sept. 9 in Byfield.

Davi Leao was the star in this game scoring a career-high four times.

“He has been real strong all year,” stated Bisognano, about the striker. “He found different ways to score in this game.”

Asher Schulz, Nolan Pierce, Logan Soroko and Brendan Trentsch had the four other goals. For Pierce and Soroko, it was their first-career goals while it was the first goal of the season for Trentsch.

“All 19 kids got to play in that game,” said Bisognano.

O’Driscoll did not face any shots on net as most of the game took place in Viking territory.

The Hornets scored four goals in each half.

On Oct. 16, the Hornets will host Georgetown at 4:45 p.m.

Two days later, they visit Andover for a non-league contest at 3 p.m.

North Reading then returns to CAL play on Oct. 21 as they visit Hamilton-Wenham at 4:30 p.m.

Entering this week, the Hornets were ranked 9th in the MIAA Division 3 power rankings. Lynnfield is ranked 16th. The top 32 teams at the end of the regular season automatically qualify for the state tournament.
