NORTH READING — On Nov. 1, the brackets came out for the MIAA Division 3 boys soccer tournament. North Reading High received the 10th seed as they finished at 14-2-2 overall.

On Wednesday night, the Hornets hosted 23rd-seeded Dedham in the first round. Dedham entered that game with a mark of 6-10-2 (result unknown at press time).

“I think we can surprise some teams,” said Hornets head coach Mark Bisognano, before the start of the tournament. “Not many people thought that we would win the league (Cape Ann League Kinney Division) title heading into this year but we did.”

The Hornet offense is led by striker Davi Leao who had 18 goals and six assists. Gavin Wesley was second with 19 points as she had nine goals and a team-high 10 assists.

Asher Schulz was third with nine points as he had six goals and three assists.

North Reading entered the states a little banged up as junior midfielder Mike Hurley and sophomore defenseman and midfielder Ryan DiCarlo were going to miss that Dedham game.

The team has also been without sophomore Nate Romanski all year do to an ankle injury.

Goalkeeper, Dylan O’Driscoll, will be making his playoff debut on Wednesday.

The Hornets entered the tournament on a five-game winning streak.

If North Reading beats Dedham they will play the winner of the No. 7 Old Rochester vs. No. 26 Lynnfield game sometime this weekend in the Round of 16.

In the regular season, the Hornets split with Lynnfield as each team won, 1-0, in the two games.

“It would make for an interesting match-up playing them again,” said Bisognano, as Lynnfield was moved up from Division 4 this year.
