Netmen’s 3-0 week leads to 9-3 record

NORTH READING — The North Reading High boys’ tennis team improved to 9-3 on Tuesday afternoon as they beat Methuen, 4-1, at home in a non-league match.

“They came into this match with only two losses,” pointed out Hornets head coach Mark Bisognano, about the Rangers. “This win shows the strength of our league.”

Senior co-captain, Parker Lee, won 6-2, 6-0 at first singles while second-singles player, Kellen Tiberii, won a tough two setter.

He won the first set, 7-5, and then won, 7-6 (7-3 in the tiebreaker).

Raffi Toby played at third singles and won in three sets, 2-6, 6-2, 6-1.

In doubles action, the first duo of John Pastore and Nolan Pierce shutout their opponents, 6-0, 6-0. The second team of Connor Abruzzese and Sameer Murthy lost 7-6 (7-5 in the tiebreaker), 6-3.

The day before, the Hornets beat Ipswich, 5-0, to improve to 6-2 in the Cape Ann League.

“It was much closer than the final would indicate,” pointed out Bisognano. “The two doubles matches went to three sets.”

Lee won, 6-1, 6-0, while Tiberii won, 6-4, 6-2. Toby, meanwhile, won 7-6 (7-3 in the tiebreaker), 6-3.

Pastore and Pierce won, 7-5, 4-6, 10-8 (10-game pro set) at first doubles. Murthy and Reilly Mabbett also won in three sets, 3-6, 6-1, 6-0. in second doubles.

On May 8, the Hornets won at Rockport, 5-0.

Lee won, 6-0, 6-1, while Tiberii won, 6-2, 6-3, at second singles. Toby also won in straight sets at third singles, 6-0, 6-1.
Pastore and Pierce won, 6-1, 6-2 while Murthy and Abruzzese won in shutout fashion, 6-0, 6-0.

“They graduated a bunch of their players from last year,” said Bisognano, about the Vikings. “They have a very young roster this season.”

On Thursday, the Hornets host Lynnfield at 4 p.m. looking for a split of the season series. They then welcome Malden the next day for a non-league match, also at 4 p.m.

On Monday, the Hornets return to CAL play as they host Hamilton-Wenham. They then host non-league Melrose on May 20.

Both of those matches will start at 4 p.m.

The Melrose match is the Hornets’ Senior Day as the three seniors will be honored after the match.
