NORTH READING — The North Reading High boys’ tennis team fell, 4-1, to Newburyport at home on April 16. With that defeat, the Hornets fell to 3-2 overall and 1-2 in the Cape Ann League.
Senior co-captain, Parker Lee, had the team’s lone win, 6-4, 6-4, at first singles.
Kellen Tiberii lost in three sets at second singles as he won, 6-4, in the first set but lost 7-6 (8-6 in the tiebreaker) and 10-8 in the 10-point final set.
“The match was already decided so whoever got to 10 points first wins it,” explained Hornets head coach Mark Bisognano.
At third singles, Raffi Toby, lost, 6-1, 7-6 (7-5 in the tiebreaker).
In doubles action, the first team of Connor Abruzzese and Sameer Murthy fell, 6-1, 6-4.
The second team of freshman, Matt Lazure and Charlie Sarno lost, 6-2, 6-1. That was the varsity debut for the 9th-graders.
“We were without John (Pastore) and Nolan (Pierce) who are on the school trip to Greece so I thought this would be a good time to get Matt and Charlie in there,” said Bisognano.
Bisognano is looking forward to the rematch later this season as he feels like his squad has a good shot of splitting the season series.
“The second and third singles matches were close so I think that we can beat them with a full roster,” he said.
The next two matches for the Hornets will both be at home on April 28 and 29.
On the 28th, they host Amesbury. They then welcome CAL newcomer Mystic Valley the next day.
Both of those matches will start at 4 p.m.
